Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effects of low-level diode laser irradiation on the healing of tooth extraction sockets in young and aged rats.

Methods: The left and right maxillary first molars of all rats, 12-week-old young rats (n=12) and 80-week-old aged rats (n=12), were extracted and only right sockets were irradiated daily for 3, 5, 7 or 14 days with laser. Specimens were evaluated by the mRNA expression analyses of Runx2, collagen type I, osteocalcin, vascular endothelial growth factor and platelet derived growth factor-B.

Results: The expression levels of osteogenic markers and growth factors mRNA were higher in groups receiving laser therapy than those that did not in both young and aged rats, and the difference of expression levels was greater in young rats than in aged ones.

Conclusion: 980nm GaAlAs low-level diode laser therapy was useful for the promotion of alveolar bone healing even in aged rats.
